CanSkate Program
Submitted By Yaana Davies on Monday, August 6, 2018
With programming designed by Skate Canada, CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Based on Sport Canada’s long-term athlete development (LTAD) principles, CanSkate centers on physical literacy and the fundamental skills needed to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a recreational activity. Skaters are trained by professional coaches who are assisted by trained program assistants.

In the CanSkate program, skaters rotate between coaches and stations, earning badges as they progress through stages 1 to 6. Skaters progress at their own rate and our coaches make sessions active using teaching aids and upbeat music in a motivational environment.

At each session, skaters will start with a warmup. Next, they are divided into groups that rotate every 10 min. through three different stations. Each station focuses on a different skill set; Balance, Control or Agility. At each teaching station skaters will have structured lessons and the Fun Zone has a variety of games and skill review. We finish with a group activity and cool down.

Skaters need skates, a CSA-approved hockey helmet, mittens and warm layered clothing
